Frequently Asked Questions

What is Islamic Inheritance (Faraid)?

Faraid is the Islamic law of inheritance, defining how a deceased Muslim's estate is distributed among relatives, based on fixed shares (Zawil Furud) and residuary shares (Asabah).

How much does a husband/wife inherit?

A husband inherits 1/2 of his wife's estate if she has no descendants, or 1/4 if she does. A wife inherits 1/4 of her husband's estate if he has no descendants, or 1/8 if he does.

What are the pre-distribution deductions?

Before distribution, funeral expenses, outstanding debts, and a valid will (Wasiyyah - up to 1/3 of the remaining estate) must be deducted from the total estate.

Can siblings inherit if sons exist?

No. According to the rules of Hajb (blocking), sons and grandsons completely block all brothers and sisters from inheriting.
